Breakups are difficult, but don’t let them conquer you. I’m not saying to fight back with a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and a box of tissues, but let yourself be better than the breakup. Maintain your self-esteem, strength and take your heart back. Whether it’s in pieces or just a little bruised, time has a way of fixing things like this. Here are four tips to take your love life back and hold your head high!

1. Accept That It Is Over

The relationship happened and so did the breakup. You’re no longer entitled to know the details of your ex’s life because you’re not a couple anymore. As hard as it is, you need to understand that you’re on your own now. Definitely makes for the most trying realization, but once you’ve done this it will only get easier. Let it out and deal with the tears, but then regain control knowing that the worst is over.

2. Get Out of the House

There is absolutely no reason to keep yourself locked in your room with the curtains shut acting like someone just died. The rest of the universe is still outside your door no matter how hard you try to hide. There’s nothing wrong with being social and actually having a good time. Just because one piece of your life fell apart doesn’t mean the rest of it needs to suffer.

3. Try Something New

Get out of your comfort zone because the beauty of distraction will make you feel much better. Have you ever wanted to join an online dating site or sing karaoke? Maybe you’ve always wanted to go scuba diving. Do it! Now is the time to do something you never thought you could and see the satisfaction of independence. It will leave you with a refreshed perspective and a huge morale boost!

4. Hate the Player, Not the Game

Don’t let the breakup kill relationships for you. It wouldn’t be fair if all people were judged based on one person’s mistakes, right? So don’t give in to that attitude. If things didn’t work out with this person it is because there’s a better match for you out there somewhere. Give yourself the chance to find them. Take some time for yourself to cope, but don’t be afraid to put your heart out there again. It’s scary, but in order to find the happiness you’re dreaming of you have to let your guard down eventually.

Now, toughen up and get back out there. The whole world doesn’t need to know your spirit is slightly bruised. Chances are that no one is going to throw the breakup in your face. Who knows, you might actually have people outside your front door waiting to help you through the tough time. Just take each day one day at a time and stop analyzing all the details. Every single moment you waste in that miserable state of mind is another moment wasted.
